On June 24, 2024, Miguel Ramos of 106 Amelia St. Houma, LA, age 51, pled guilty to Vehicular Homicide. Ramos was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Lana Chaney, and presiding over this matter was the Honorable Judge Keyojuan Turner. This guilty plea was the result of a plea agreement with prosecutors following a 2022 fatal car crash which claimed the life of 19-year-old Lebai A. Aguillar of Houma.
On December 22, 2022, Louisiana State Police troopers responded to the area of U.S. Hwy 90 eastbound east of Amelia in Assumption Parish in connection with a two-vehicle fatal crash. Troopers learned that Ramos was operating a 2008 Lincoln Navigator in the eastbound lane when he was approaching a 2022 Ram 2500 pick-up truck pulling a tailer from the rear at a high rate of speed. Ramos swerved in an effort to avoid striking the trailer, overcorrected, lost control and began rotating down U.S. Hwy 90. Ramos’ vehicle struck the pickup truck before striking the ledge of the overpass. Ramos’ vehicle overturned and landed on its roof below the overpass. Aguillar, who was a passenger in Ramos’ vehicle, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. Ramos was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for injuries and released. Troopers determined that Ramos was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. The occupants of the pick-up truck were uninjured, and the driver was not impaired. Troopers obtained a warrant of arrest for Ramos, who was subsequently booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center.
Upon entering a guilty plea to the above-mentioned charge. Pursuant to the plea agreement with prosecutors, Ramos was sentenced to 15 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.
