Texas Man Pleads Guilty in Connection with 2023 Deadly Ascension Parish Crash

Last week, Joshua Cannon of 136 7th Ave. Nederland, TX, age 36, pled guilty to Vehicular Homicide and DWI 3rd Offense. Cannon was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Adam Koenig, and presiding over this matter was the Honorable Judge Steven Tureau. This crash ultimately claimed the life of 23-year-old Jaranisha Carter of Prairieville.

On October 24, 2023, Louisiana State Police Troopers were dispatched to the area of I-10 Eastbound near mile post 186 in Ascension Parish. The crash investigation revealed that a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse operated by Joshua Cannon was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane of I-10 while a 2008 Honda Accord operated by Jaranisha Carter was traveling eastbound. The two vehicles collided head on. Carter was transported to an area hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Cannon was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for moderate injuries. Cannon displayed obvious signs of impairment and refused to cooperate with troopers during the investigation. Troopers applied for and were granted a search warrant for a blood sample to be drawn from Cannon. The blood sample was submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab where it was analyzed. Scientific analysis indicated that Cannon’s Blood Alcohol Concentration was .18g%. Once released from the hospital, Cannon was arrested and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail.

Upon entering a guilty plea to the above-mentioned charges, sentencing was deferred to a later date pending a Pre-Sentence Investigation.

Sentencing is tentatively set for August 18, 2025.
