On last week, Kevin Johnson of 12919 Driftwood Dr. Baker, LA, age 56, pled guilty to Armed Robbery and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Johnson was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Leila Braswell, and presiding over this matter was the Honorable Judge Keyojuan Turner. This guilty plea was the result of a plea agreement with prosecutors in connection with a 2018 robbery of an area restaurant.
On January 16, 2018, City of Gonzales Police Officers responded to a restaurant along Hwy 30 Gonzales in reference to a robbery. Detectives responded and learned that a black male subject entered the restaurant through a rear door which was unlocked armed with a handgun. The subject pointed the weapon at individuals inside the restaurant and demanded the manager to open the register. In addition, the subject also demanded money from a customer and waitress. The subject then fled through the rear of the business.
In February 2018, Gonzales detectives consulted with Baton Rouge Police Department detectives after learning of multiple similar robberies in the Baton Rouge area. Through further investigation, detectives were able to identify Kevin Johnson as a possible suspect. Detectives interviewed victims and witnesses who were able to positively identify Kevin Johnson via photo lineup as the armed male who committed the Gonzales robbery. In addition, detectives learned that Johnson had prior felony convictions for robbery. Detectives obtained a warrant of arrest for Johnson who was subsequently arrested and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail.
Upon entering a guilty plea to the above-mentioned charges, pursuant to the plea agreement with prosecutors, Johnson was sentenced to 15 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.
