SERVING ASCENSION, ASSUMPTION & ST. JAMES PARISHES

During the week of September 23 – September 27, 2024, the following defendants pled guilty to various charges and were sentenced in the 23rd Judicial District Court, parishes of Ascension, Assumption, and St. James.

Ascension Parish: 

  1. Jose Ortiz, 434 W 12th San Juan, TX, age 39, pled guilty to Second Degree Battery. Sentencing is set for October 24, 2024. 
  1. Juan Madera Ortiz Sr., 507 Wildwood Dr. Sorrento, LA, age 42, pled guilty to Attempted Manslaughter. Sentencing is set for October 24, 2024. 
  1. Juan Ortiz Jr., 5071 Wildwood Dr. Sorrento, LA, age 19, pled guilty to Attempted Manslaughter. Sentencing is set for October 24, 2024. 

The above cases were prosecuted by First Assistant District Attorney Charles “Chuck” Long and Assistant District Attorney Kristin Tregre. Presiding over these matters was the Honorable Judge Cody Martin. 

  1. Desean Landry, 5444 Mansour Ave Alexandria, LA, age 36, pled guilty to Armed Robbery and was sentenced to 15 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served. 
  1. Jessie Piper, 30430 O’neal Lane Baton Rouge, LA, age 19, pled no contest to Simple Burglary and Theft of a Firearm. The defendant was sentenced to 5 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on 3 years supervised probation. 

The above cases were prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Phil Maples and Brant Mayer. Presiding over these matters was the Honorable Judge Cody Martin. 

Assumption Parish: 

  1. James Landry, 1885 Oakwood Dr. St. Gabriel, LA, age 35, pled guilty to Felony Hit and Run Driving and was sentenced to 2 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on 1-year supervised probation. 

The above case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Lana Chaney, and presiding over this matter was the Honorable Judge Keyojuan Turner. 

  1. Lawrence Vandergrifft, 3929 Hwy 70 S Pierre Part, LA, age 41, pled guilty to Failure to Register and Notify as a Sex Offender or Child Predator and was sentenced to 2 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served. 
  1. Larry Murry, 2876 A Hwy 1 Labadieville, LA, age 44, pled guilty to Failure to Register and Notify as a Sex Offender or Child Predator and was sentenced to 2 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served. 

The above cases were prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Thomas Daigle, and presiding over these matters was the Honorable Judge Jason Verdigets. 

St. James Parish: 

  1. Travon Banks, 2858 Garden Lakes Paulina, LA, age 23, pled guilty to Illegal Possession of Stolen Firearms. Sentencing was deferred to a later date pending a Pre-Sentence Investigation. 

The above case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Adam Koenig, and presiding over this matter was the Honorable Judge John Smith.
