SERVING ASCENSION, ASSUMPTION & ST. JAMES PARISHES

Laplace Woman to Serve 18 Years after Smuggling Heroin into Jail

On May 7, 2024, Emily Taylor of 216 Warwick St. Laplace, LA, age 29, pled guilty to Distribution of a Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance and Possession or Introduction of Contraband into a Penal Institution. Taylor was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Adam Koenig, and presiding over this matter was the Honorable Judge Cody Martin. This guilty plea was the result of a plea agreement with prosecutors in connection with a 2022 narcotics investigation.

On June 2, 2022, narcotics agents with the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the parish jail after learning that three female inmates were being transported to an area hospital after possibly consuming illegal narcotics. Upon interviewing these inmates, agents learned that Emily Taylor had been booked into jail the day before and on this day was moved from a holding cell into a female tier of the jail. Taylor told the inmates that she had concealed heroin inside of her person and was successful in smuggling the heroin into the tier. Taylor distributed the heroin to the other three inmates. Agents applied for and were granted a warrant of arrest for Taylor who was subsequently booked on these charges.

Upon entering a guilty plea to the above-mentioned charges, pursuant to the plea agreement with prosecutors, Emily Taylor was sentenced to 18 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.
