Local Man Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter following Donaldsonville Homicide

On April 26, 2015, Shawn Broom of 504 Catherine St. Donaldsonville, LA., age 28, pled guilty to Manslaughter. Broom who was originally indicted on the 2nd Degree Murder of Michael Stewart, age 21, of Donaldsonville was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Shawn Bush. The presiding judge was the Honorable Judge Thomas Kliebert.

On March 10, 2015, Shawn Broom and the victim, Michael Stewart, were sitting on the porch of a residence on St. Vincent St. in Donaldsonville when Stewart was fatally shot. Stewart is alleged to have taunted Broom for several hours prior that day and led Broom to believe that he was in possession of a firearm. A brief struggle then ensued between the two. It was at this time that Broom fired one shot into the chest of Stewart. Stewart was transported to Prevost Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Per the Honorable Judge Thomas Kliebert, sentencing was deferred pending a pre-sentence investigation. Broom faces up to 40 years in prison
