Napoleonville Man Pleads Guilty to Attempted Murder and Cruelty to Juvenile Charges

          On November 2, 2022, Derrick Haughton of 117 Foley Ave. Napoleonville, LA., age 34, pled guilty to Attempted 2nd Degree Murder (4 counts) and Cruelty to Juveniles (2 counts). Haughton was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Lana Chaney and presiding over this matter is the Honorable Judge Alvin Turner Jr.  

          On May 9, 2021, Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of LA 403 Paincourtville in reference to a shooting incident. Upon arrival, deputies located evidence on scene indicating a shooting had occurred. Detectives canvassed the scene and during their investigation learned that Derrick Haughton had intervened in an altercation amongst several juveniles and had physically assaulted two of the juveniles. Haughton left the area but was followed by one of the parents of one of the juveniles involved. Haughton exited his vehicle and fired multiple gunshots into the vehicle driven by the juvenile’s parent. Inside of the victim’s vehicle were two adults and two juveniles. Haughton was subsequently arrested and booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center.   

          Upon entering a guilty plea to the above-mentioned charges, sentencing was deferred to a later date pending a Pre-Sentence Investigation.
